The Mather House is a very familiar sight to all those who routinely drive south to South Burnaby—you can’t miss it nestled into Deer Lake Park as you’re coming off the south Kensington Ave freeway exits. This Romanesque Revival styled mansion, originally known as ‘Altnadene,’ was designed by architect Frank Macy and built for William and Mary Mathers in 1912. It was used as a convalescent house for wounded soldiers during WWI. It was then purchased by the Benedictine Monks in 1913 and converted into the Seminary of Christ the King, which operated until 1953. The City of Burnaby purchased the building in 1971 and used it as part of the Deer Lake Park Arts Center. It was designated as a heritage property in 1992.
