Steveston House

1989. Acrylic on canvas. 16 x 12

I named this piece before I knew anything about it. Back in the ’80’s, we didn’t have internet, and I just spotted and photographed this scene while exploring the districts along South Arm of Fraser River, starting in Steveston and driving east on Dyke Road. The area is roughly 40 minutes south of Downtown Vancouver, BC. About 25 minutes south-west of the main airport. I soon learned that the house was a designated heritage farmhouse and later learned that the scene shows the house and buildings of London Farm, which is in Richmond, BC, very near Steveston. You can find out more about it here:

I always found this area fascinating. Living in Vancouver is like living with mountains on your doorstep, yet less than an hour away it’s as if you’re in a different country. A flat river delta with wide rivers, farmlands, fishing boats, deciduous trees. What really caught my eye, was this scene also included Washington State’s Mt Baker in the background haze.
