Glory Foods, 24″ x 24″ Acrylic on Canvas, in progress. Follow along as I paint this evening Fall view along Carrall Street in historic Gastown, in Vancouver, BC.
Working title: Gastown. In Progress 1. Started on a new 36” x 36” canvas a week or so ago. I started with a rough-ish drawing which I transferred to the canvas with graphite Saral paper. Now I’m blocking everything in, mostly in grayscale, setting it up to glaze in colour later. Aiming towards a colourful, wet, Vancouver evening scene. Still figuring out what I want to call it.
Working title: Gastown. In Progress 2. Continuing to block in the scene. I can’t say I’m sticking to an overall strategy as I move along, this time I’m simply adding paint. I always like these early stages as the image emerges from white.
Working title: Gastown. In Progress 3. Continuing to block in the scene. I usually like to do this first pass mostly to just cover the entire canvas with paint. With acrylics, it’s impossible to get crisp detailing until the first coat is down. The gesso primed canvas unevenly sucks up most of the first coat so l use it as an opportunity to draw and build in starting texture. The awnings are next, then I’ll start the second pass.
Working title: Gastown. In Progress 4. I’ve roughed in the awnings and darkened up the surroundings a little. Next I’ll finish blocking in the store fronts and begin painting in the tree over the awnings and the street lamp.
Working title: Gastown. In Progress 5. I’m into my second and final detailing pass now, working on the shop and tree details. It’s feeling close to finished. Maybe a week or two left to go.
Gastown. In Progress 6. It’s right down to the short strokes now. I’m currently trying to make up my mind on what colour jacket should the lady under the Street light be wearing. Other than that, maybe 6 to 8 more hours to go.
Working title: Gastown. In Progress 7. It’s been a while since l last posted any progress on this piece. My design work and life have been soaking up all my time over the past month(s?), but I have been nudging it forward bit by bit, especially the cobblestones, and now it is only few more hours from being finished. Hopefully this weekend.
Glory Foods, 24”x24” acrylic on canvas. Done! 🏁🍺😄 Despite ‘other work’ delays, l felt this one was a quick (just under 100 hours), fun project, relative to some of my other latest works. I’ll probably do a few more smaller pieces over the rest of the year. This one will now be sent out for digital capture and prints will be available soon. Thanks everyone for following along 🙏😊
