Shanghai Alley – Artwork In Progress

Posted on July 27, 2024 by Leonard Rooney - Artwork in Progress

Shanghai Alley, 20″ x 20″ Acrylic on Canvas, in progress. The historic Shanghai Alley is located near the entrance to Vancouver’s Chinatown and is an L shaped roadway which leads south from Pender St, then turns right to exit onto Taylor Avenue. I recently ‘discovered’ this historic building, which is actually the rear facade of 509 Carrall Street, directly on the back-side of the Sam Key Building (the world’s thinnest building), on Pender. You can see the dark grey side of the Sam Key Building with its single arched window on the left of this piece.

Although I may have seen this building frontage years ago, it didn’t register or make an impression at the time. I was always too busy looking at the front of the famous Sam Key (the world’s thinnest building) Building. But on a recent walk, a friend pointed it out to me and I was surprised—maybe it’s painted differently? It really stood out. I loved the window picture of the woman in traditional dress and pose with flowers.

In progress 1, Back into the city. This one from the western edge of Vancouver’s Chinatown

In progress 2, The buildings are taking shape as I continue to draw and block in the scene.

In progress 3, Still drawing and blocking in the scene, adding colour and some rough details to the windows.

In progress 4, I’m now just about complete on my first rough pass, which basically covers the entire canvas with a coat of acrylic. This seals the surface and allows me glaze on more opaque surface character and work on finer details. Quite a few hours of drafting went into just the pavement on this one. I’m enjoying rendering the street herringbone cobbles; my OCD really kicks in on such repetitive tasks.

In progress 5, I’ve been adding more opacity and depth to the building’s main colours while also adding some local wildlife and an Amanda Adams inspired cloud.

In progress 6, I’m continuing to build up colour depth while adding more texture and detailing. The image is getting very near completion now. I expect another 16 to 20 hours.

In progress 7 - Finished, Finished! For a smaller piece like this, I expected this to be a much faster to complete, but since my last progress update, I ended up making a meal out of tightening up on the textures and details.
